I don’t know how to begin to express how exciting this is
I’m sorry, but I think these are just pencil tests from when the movie was further along.
I’m pretty sure there was always the intention of having it be in CG (except in the very early Rapunzel: Unbraided stages with “Vince” and “Claire”).
I know that, during conceptualization of a CG movie, animators & character designers sometimes do pencil tests as a way to figure out how the characters move, and to figure out how their facial expressions and designs are working out. You see, you gotta know traditional animation in order to do CG animation. CG animators work out a lot of things in 2D before moving to 3D, in order to make the 3D/CG look more organic.
